Notorious tiger poachers arrested in Melghat tiger reserve

Maharashtra forest officials arrested six tiger poachers and recovered poaching tools in Melghat tiger reserve, Amravati district. The have admitted to killing a tiger two months ago.

Elephant tusks seized in Bihar

Enforcement officials posted in Indo-Nepal border had seized 10.4kg of ivory and arrested three persons in Araria district of Bihar.

Red sanders seized in Tirupati

Andhra Pradesh police arrested 10 smugglers and seized 1.5 tonnes of red sanders in Chittoor district on 5 March 2013.

Uttarakhand received prestigious Clark R. Bavin Wildlife Law Enforcement Award

International community was honored Uttarakhand police and forest department by awarding prestigious Clark R. Bavin Wildlife Law Enforcement award 2013 at Bangkok during CITES CoP 16 on 5 March 2013. From April 2010 to August 2012 the Uttarakhand Forestry and Police Departments have undertaken nearly 100 seizures of illegally trafficked wildlife; a seizure rate higher than any of their counterparts in other Indian states. These seizures have included a variety of species protected by CITES including big cats, reptiles and amphibians, Asian elephants, bears, crocodiles and more. In the vast majority of these cases, the accused were successfully prosecuted and penalized. The collective efforts of these departments has raised the profile of wildlife crime law enforcement led to an increase in the deterrence of wildlife crime in Uttarakhand.

One more elephant was killed in train accident at North Bengal today morning.

92 leopards killed in 2 months

The first two months of the year have been deadly for leopards in India as 92 big cats were poached, poisoned, killed by mobs and forest guards and met with accidental deaths during this period. Leopards belong to the Schedule -1 species, under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and need the highest level of protection. Villagers killed a leopard in Himachal Pradesh

A villager was shot dead a leopard in Una district of Himachal Pradesh on the night of 3 March 2013.

Tiger and leopard found dead in Ramnagar division

Body of a tigress and a leopard suspected to be poisoned were found in Ramnagar division, adjoining to Corbett tiger reserve on 2 March 2013.
