Star Tortoises seized at Trichy Airport, Tamil Nadu

Customs Air Intelligence officials seized 295 live star tortoises from a Kuala Lumpur-bound passenger at the Tiruchi airport on 28 June 2012.

ON 28 JUNE 2012 , BASED ON SPECIFIC INTELLIGENCE THE OFFICERS OF AIR INTELLIGENCE UNIT, ALONG WITH THE BAGGAGE OFFICERS OF CUSTOMS AIRPORT, TRICHY INTERCEPTED A PASSANGER NAME: SHRI AHMED SIRAJUDEEN , MALE , 47 YEARS , SON OF MOHAMED RABIUDEEN, OF CHENNAI AT CUSTOMS AIRPORT, TRICHY WHEN HE WAS ABOUT TO BOARD THE FLIGHT NO. ALK-132 (UL-132) TO KUALALAMPUR , MALAYSIA VIA COLOMBO. ON EXAMINATION OF HIS CHECK IN BAG , THE OFFICERS FOUND 295 LIVE STAR TORTOISES CONCEALED IN SIX CLOTH BAGS PACKED IN GREYISH BROWN COLOUR STROLLER BAG. THE CONTRA BANNED WAS SEIZED UNDER THE CUSTOMS ACT , 1962 READ WITH THE WILDLIFE PROTECTION ACT 1972 (AS AMENDED). NO VALUE COULD BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE CONTRA BANNED AND ITS OWNERSHIP AND SALE IS ILLEGAL . STAR TORTOISE IS PROTECTED UNDER SCHEDULE -IV OF THE WILD LIFE PROTECTION ACT, 1972 (AS AMENDED) , WHICH BANS ITS POSSESSION AND TRANSFER IN ANY FORM FOR COMMERCIAL USE. IT IS ALSO PROTECTED UNDER THE CONVENTION ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN ENDANGERED SPECIES (CITIES) OF WHICH INDIA IS A SIGNATORY. ON INVESTIGATION IT WAS FOUND THAT A PERSON AT CHENNAI ARRANGED FOR THE ILLICIT EXPORT OF LIVE STAR TORTOISE , THE PROTECTED ITEM, TO KUALALAMPUR (MALAYSIA). FURTHER INVESTIGATION IS IN PROGRESS AND IT IS THE COMPLETE CONFIDENTIAL MATTER NOT TO BE OPEN IN THE MEDIA OR IN A PUBLIC
