Three poachers convicted for elephant poaching in Tamil Nadu

The court of District Munsif -cum- Judicial Magistrate in Kotagiri, Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu had convicted three people for killing an elephant and removing its tusks in July 2011 at Nilgiris North forest division. Three convicts were sentenced to 3 years rigorous imprisonment and ₹10,000 fine each for violating Wildlife Protection Act and a fine of ₹500 each for violating Tamil Nadu Forest Act. Out of fine ₹14,000 has been ordered to reward the persons who renders assistance in the detection of the offence/ the apprehension of the offenders u/s 60A(1) of Wildlife Protection Act.

4 wild elephants electrocuted

In three separate incidents 4 wild elephants were electrocuted, 2 in Dibrugarh district Assam, 1 each in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu and Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal.

10 days imprisonment for people caught with sea cucumber

Last month a local court in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu had sentenced three people for 10 days of imprisonment and ₹ 250 fine each whom were caught with 100 kg of sea cucumbers in October 2010.

All Holothurians are listed in Schedule-I of Wildlife Protection Act. Section 51 (1) of Act says "Provided that where the offence committed is in relation to any animal specified in Schedule I or Part II of Schedule II or meat of any such animal or animal article, trophy or uncured trophy derived from such animal or where the offence relates to hunting in a sanctuary or a National Park or altering the boundaries of a sanctuary or a National Park, such offence shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than three years but may extend to seven years and also with fine which shall not be less than ten thousand rupees".

Same court also dismissed another wildlife complaint filed by forest department, citing reason as "No representation for the complainant. The complainant called absent. On 11.8.17 is also the complainant absent. In spite of repeated adjournment the complainant is not come forward to receive N.B.W after making necessary fee. Hence the complaint is dismissed u/s204(4) of Cr.p.c".

Shark carcasses seized in Tamil Nadu

Forest officials have seized 10 carcasses of sharks when they fell on the roadside after the truck in which they were being transported met with an accident at Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu on 23 April 2016.

5 elephants killed in train accident, electrocution and poaching on last weekend

Carcass of a male elephant with tusks removed was found in Rairangpur forest division of Odisha on 21 November 2015.

A wild elephant chased by a group of villagers was run over by a train near Madarihat, Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on 22 November 2015.

Two female elephants died in Sonepur district of Odisha when some miscreants were passed electricity in solar fence on 22 November 2015.

In an another incident a male elephant was electrocuted when came into contact with an illegal electric fence erected around a farm in Sathyamangalam tiger reserve of Tamil Nadu on 21 November 2015.

247 star tortoises seized at Madurai airport

A person who was on the way to Kuala Lumpur via a flight to Sri Lanka from Madurai, Tamil Nadu was detained by Customs officials with 247 star tortoises on 27 September 2015 night.

Turtles seized in Kolkata and Chennai

Enforcement officials seized Forty four Indian tent turtles, 27 star tortoises, one crowned river turtle and four spotted black terrapins in Kolkata yesterday. In Chennai One hundred and thirty eight Spotted black terrapins that were to be smuggled to Kuala Lumpur through Colombo was seized by the officials of the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (Southern Region) at the Chennai airport on 6 August 2015.

Star tortoise smuggling goes up in Chennai

Attempt to smuggle star tortoises to Malaysia through Chennai international airport have increased in last ten days, in the latest incident two persons were detained with 130 tortoises on 9 July 2015.
