Three poachers convicted for elephant poaching in Tamil Nadu

The court of District Munsif -cum- Judicial Magistrate in Kotagiri, Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu had convicted three people for killing an elephant and removing its tusks in July 2011 at Nilgiris North forest division. Three convicts were sentenced to 3 years rigorous imprisonment and ₹10,000 fine each for violating Wildlife Protection Act and a fine of ₹500 each for violating Tamil Nadu Forest Act. Out of fine ₹14,000 has been ordered to reward the persons who renders assistance in the detection of the offence/ the apprehension of the offenders u/s 60A(1) of Wildlife Protection Act.

Karnataka: Accused were acquitted in elephant electrocution cases

Recently a Sessions court in Mysuru were acquitted the accused in two separate elephant electrocution cases registered in Mysuru district, in both cases police was the complainant. Offence was reported on June 2012 and January 2016 respectively.

Court found out that in both cases complainant were failed to collect material evidence to show that the accused was the owner of the land where the elephants were found dead due to electrocution. In addition to that in both cases with regard to the offence punishable under Section 9 r/w Section 51 of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 is concerned, the I.O. has not obtained the proper sanction from the concerned Authority under Section 55 of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Therefore, the cognizance of the offence punishable under Section 9 r/w Section 51 of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 is not sustainable under Law.

Engine drivers honoured for save the elephant

North East Frontier Railway was awarded two engine drivers for exceptional devotion towards duty for save the elephant. Shri Sujit Prasad (Loco Pilot) and Shri Khageshwar Singh (Sr Asst Loco Pilot) based at Alipurduar Jn while o­n duty o­n a goods train suddenly observed a big elephant o­n railway track at KM 29/4-5 between Sevok and Gulma station o­n 23.10.2017. They immediately stopped the train by applying emergency brake thereby saved the elephant and a probable derailment. In recognition of their service and devotion towards duty Addl. General Manager N.F.Railway awarded them with “Man of the month October – 2017” certificate along-with a cash award of Rs. 5,000/- each.

Elephant killed in Assam

The carcass of an adult male wild elephant, with its tusks, trunk and tail chopped off and chunks of meat hacked off from the body, was found at Dolopa village in Assam's Sivasagar district on 21 October 2017.

In three separate incidents 4 wild elephants were electrocuted, 2 in Dibrugarh district Assam, 1 each in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu and Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal.

5 elephants killed in train accident, electrocution and poaching on last weekend

Carcass of a male elephant with tusks removed was found in Rairangpur forest division of Odisha on 21 November 2015.

A wild elephant chased by a group of villagers was run over by a train near Madarihat, Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on 22 November 2015.

Two female elephants died in Sonepur district of Odisha when some miscreants were passed electricity in solar fence on 22 November 2015.

In an another incident a male elephant was electrocuted when came into contact with an illegal electric fence erected around a farm in Sathyamangalam tiger reserve of Tamil Nadu on 21 November 2015.

Elephant and calf electrocuted in Dhenkanal

A mother elephant and its 6 months old calf were electrocuted in Dhenkanal district when coming in contact with 11kv electric wire on 11 October 2015 night. In last one month several elephants were electrocuted in Odisha.

Huge cache of elephant ivory seized in Delhi

In continuation of an ongoing investigation of elephant poaching in Kerala, the state forest department seized large number of raw ivory and finished products from a hide out in New Delhi last week.

Ivory trader arrested in Delhi

An ivory trader based in Delhi was arrested in a joint operation carried out by forest officials from Kerala, Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) personnel and the Delhi police on 2 October 2015. According to the information received by the forest intelligence wing, as many as 40 elephants were gunned down for extracting tusks by the poaching gangs operating in the forests of Edamalayar, Parambikulam, Wayanad and Munnar during the past two years. The documents recovered by the police from the middlemen involved in the illegal trade had revealed that ivories valued over Rs 1.5 crore had been smuggled into different cities in the country from Kerala last year.

841 people were killed by tiger and elephants in last three years

In a reply given in parliament government stated that 841 people were killed by tigers and elephants between April 2012 to March 2015.

5 pieces of ivory seized in Jalpaiguri district

Five pieces of ivory, weighing around 5kg each, were seized from three persons by the officers of Belakoba range of Baikunthapur forest division in West Bengal on 4 August 2015.
