With increased landing of sharks and rays, Kochi has turned out to be the one of the most favoured destinations those in the trade. It is estimated that an average of 3,500 tonne of shark is landed in Kochi annually. An analysis carried out by the fisheries experts of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) suggested that the shark landings in Kochi harbour was on the rise. This includes several species of sharks and rays protected under the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and Wildlife Protection Act.
