Rhesus Macaque declared as vermin in Shimla

Central Government through a gazette notification declared Rhesus macaque monkeys (Macaca mulatta) as vermin for a period of six months in the Shimla Municipal Corporation Area limits, excluding the forest areas.

Leopard skins seized in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh

Police officials seized a leopard skin and arrested a person in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand on 5 July 2015 and caught a person with two leopard skins in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh on 6 July 2015.

Leopard poaching incidents are increasing in Himachal Pradesh, last week 6 skins were seized in Bilaspur district. In latest incident one leopard caught in trap was died at Solan district.

Government orders DFO’s retirement a year in advance

Himachal Pradesh government ordered the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) concerned to retire with immediate effect as he reportedly had failed in taking timely cognisance of large-scale illicit tree felling in the Khokra forest area of Nalagarh Forest Division.

Wildlife criminals convicted in Himachal Pradesh

A court in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh has convicted two persons for offences having committed under Wildlife Protection Act. Court observed that crimes of such nature as in the present one, offence go untreated as they are committed in accusative manner. Therefore, when the offence is committed the convicts are per-se detrimental to the ecological environment and security of the country. If the same goes unpunished or inadequately punished, it may effect the ecological and environmental security of the country.

Both the accused were sentenced to simple imprisonment for a term of two years under Section 51 of the Wile Life Act read with Section 34 of IPC and to pay fine of  Rs. 2,000/-(Two thousand only) each. In addition to that one of the accused further sentenced to simple imprisonment for a term of three years under Section 25 of the Arms Act and to pay fine of  Rs. 2,000/- (Two thousand only). The sentences of imprisonment shall run concurrently.

Nine otter skins seized in Himachal Pradesh

A joint team of Himachal Pradesh police and Wildlife Crime Control Bureau had seized 9 otter skins and arrested a member of an organized poaching group in Solan district on 31 May 2014.

Two leopards were caught in traps set by poachers in Goa and Himachal Pradesh on 17 December 2013, forest department of Himachal managed to rescue the animal but the animal caught in Goa had died.

Poachers arrested with leopard skins convicted in Punjab

A court in Pathankot, Punjab had convicted two persons from Himachal Pradesh and sentenced them to three years imprisonment and Rs. 10,000 fine each in connection with seizure of two leopard skins by police on November last year.

Hunters shot dead wrong leopard in Himachal

Last week hunters authorized by Himachal Pradesh forest department shot dead a leopard calling it as man-eater, now evidence being cited by wildlife experts and the postmortem report showing that an innocent leopard had been shot on August 11.
