Nepali national sentenced to five years imprisonment in tiger bone smuggling

In May this year a Nepali citizen from Humla district was arrested by CBI in Delhi for smuggling tiger bones which was procured from Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh. Trial court had now convicted the accused and sentenced him to 5 years rigorous imprisonment and ₹50,000 fine.

Tiger bone seizure: Five years imprisonment to 3 persons

In June 2015 Wildlife Crime Control Bureau and STF of Uttar Pradesh police were seized approximate 11 kg of tiger bones including 2 skulls from Bijnore district when they were investigating a previous wildlife crime case registered in Delhi on September 2013.  After the trial a court in Delhi had convicted 3 accused and acquitted 1 person. Convicted persons were sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for five years and a fine of Rs. 20,000/- each.

Court noted that expert witness who has stated that on the basis of lab analysis, the case property was concluded as that both the skulls are of Tiger (Panthera tigris). Witnesses have totally supported the case of the prosecution regarding the recovery of tiger bones and also they all are corroborating each other on all material aspects and there are no major inconsistency or contradictions in their statement. Their statements on record are found to be cogent, inspires the confidence of the Court and there is no reason to disbelieve the same.

During sentencing court pointed that “Despite best efforts put in by the Government of almost all the countries across the globe, wild life offences are not coming down. Such case needs to be dealt with strictly to curb the wild life offences. Moreover, tiger is our National Animal and killing of our national pride should be dealt with iron hands. Convicts have committed offence of the greatest magnitude against the wildlife.”

Tiger skin and bones seized in Dehradun district, Uttarakhand

Special Task Force of Uttarakhand police arrested four people including a person from Dharchula with a tiger skin and approximate 25 kg tiger bones at Dehradun district of Uttarakhand on 15 May 2016.

6 tiger skins and bones seized in Uttarakhand and Kerala

In two separate incidents skins and bones of 6 wild tigers were seized in Uttarakhand and Kerala on 14 March 2016. In Uttarakhand 5 tiger skins and 125 kg tiger bones were seized and one arrested at Haridwar district. In an another incident Kerala forest officials arrested four persons with a tiger skin in Thiruvananthapuram district.

Two tiger skins and bones seized

In two separate incidents two tiger skins and bones seized in Madhya Pradesh and Assam on 13 October 2015. In Madhya Pradesh, skin of a tiger suspected to have killed in Satpura tiger reserve had seized by forest officials from a village in Chhindwara district. In Assam, forest officials of Kaziranga tiger reserve arrested two persons including a forest guard with a tiger skin and bones.

Tiger skin and bones seized in Nepal

Nepal Police arrested three persons, including an Indian national, in possession of endangered tiger’s skin and bones from Punarbas Municipality-8 in Kanchanpur district on 28 February 2015. Police nabbed the suspects while they were entering into Nepal with the animal parts they had brought from Sampurna Nagar, Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh. This is the third major haul of smuggled parts of endangered tigers in the district in the past two months.

Tiger skin, bones seized in Dharchula and Chandrapur

Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) seized a tiger skin and 4 kg tiger bones at Indo-Nepal border, Dharchula, Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand on 17 February 2015, a citizen of Nepal has arrested.

One more Indian arrested in Nepal with tiger skin and bones

Nepal Police arrested a resident of Lakhimpur district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, with a skin and around 19 kg bones of tiger from Belauri-1 in the Kanchanpur district on 19 January 2015 night. During the police interrogation, the Indian national informed that the seized parts were of a tiger that was poached in Pilibhit area in Uttar Pradesh. Last week also police seized an Indian with a hide and 18 kg bones of tiger from Dodhara, Kanchanpur that was also poached in Pilibhit.

Tiger skin and bones seized from Indians in Bhutan

Officials of the Forest Protection and Surveillance Unit in Bhutan seized a tiger skin and bones from two Indian men in Gelegphu on September 20, 2013.
