Tiger bone seizure: Five years imprisonment to 3 persons

In June 2015 Wildlife Crime Control Bureau and STF of Uttar Pradesh police were seized approximate 11 kg of tiger bones including 2 skulls from Bijnore district when they were investigating a previous wildlife crime case registered in Delhi on September 2013.  After the trial a court in Delhi had convicted 3 accused and acquitted 1 person. Convicted persons were sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for five years and a fine of Rs. 20,000/- each.

Court noted that expert witness who has stated that on the basis of lab analysis, the case property was concluded as that both the skulls are of Tiger (Panthera tigris). Witnesses have totally supported the case of the prosecution regarding the recovery of tiger bones and also they all are corroborating each other on all material aspects and there are no major inconsistency or contradictions in their statement. Their statements on record are found to be cogent, inspires the confidence of the Court and there is no reason to disbelieve the same.

During sentencing court pointed that “Despite best efforts put in by the Government of almost all the countries across the globe, wild life offences are not coming down. Such case needs to be dealt with strictly to curb the wild life offences. Moreover, tiger is our National Animal and killing of our national pride should be dealt with iron hands. Convicts have committed offence of the greatest magnitude against the wildlife.”

Five people convicted in wildlife case

In January 2017, Madhya Pradesh forest officials registered a case in Narsinghgarh in Rajgarh district against 5 persons in connection with seizure of snakes, body parts of jackal & hyena and leg-hold traps. In 10th October, a court in Narsinghgarh had found guilty in all accused and sentenced them to four years rigorous imprisonment and ₹10,000 fine each. One the convict belong to Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh is a repeat offender in wildlife crime and was a big player in illegal wildlife trade.

Six years imprisonment for hunting spotted deer in tiger reserve

In March 2013 Dudhwa tiger reserve (Uttar Pradesh) officials were seized meat of spotted deer, 14 traps, other poaching tools, ration and arrested three persons in tiger reserve. After the trial, CJM court in Lakhimpur Kheri had convicted the accused for illegally entering tiger reserve, hunting deer and sentenced them to six years imprisonment and ₹ 1,00,000 fine each.

4 years imprisonment for killing deer in tiger reserve

CJM court in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh had convicted 7 persons for killing a spotted deer in Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary under Dudhwa tiger reserve on January 2008. Court had sentenced all seven accused to four years simple imprisonment and Rs. 25,000 fine each for violation of Section 9 of Wildlife Protection Act (WPA) and three years simple imprisonment and Rs. 15,000 fine each for violation of Section 27 of WPA. Both sentences has to serve concurrently.

5 tigers killed in Uttar Pradesh were poisoned

Five tigers found dead in different parts of Pilibhit and Lakhimpur Kheri forests between May 2012 and April 2015 were poisoned. Samples of their carcasses tested positive for organochlorine pesticides, including DDT.

Tiger skin and bones seized in Nepal

Nepal Police arrested three persons, including an Indian national, in possession of endangered tiger’s skin and bones from Punarbas Municipality-8 in Kanchanpur district on 28 February 2015. Police nabbed the suspects while they were entering into Nepal with the animal parts they had brought from Sampurna Nagar, Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh. This is the third major haul of smuggled parts of endangered tigers in the district in the past two months.
