Elephant calves smuggling racket busted

Two elephant calves captured from wild and two kumki elephants were seized and four poachers arrested at Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh on 6 February 2015.

Red sanders wood cutter killed in clash with cops

A red sanders woodcutter was killed and three cops were injured in a clash between a gang of smugglers and a special combing party in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh on 29 January 2014.

DFO suspended in Tamil Nadu

A Divisional Forest Officer who recently said that several forest department personnel were in cahoots with red sander smugglers and alleged that officers aided the smugglers to fell and smuggle red sander trees worth several crore from the forest area in Vellore Circle in the last one year was suspended by Tamil Nadu government.

Sharp rise in red sanders smuggling by airline staff

Increasing instances of airline staff smuggling red sanders out of the country have alarmed officials, three cases of smuggling by airline operatives have come to light in the past month, the latest one on 20 October 2013 when two crew members of Air India were caught smuggling the wood from Delhi to Hong Kong late at night.

Suspected timber smugglers were shot dead a forest department staff and his wife on 10th November at Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu.

Assam Rifles seized Pangolin scales

Last week two cases of smuggling of pangolin scaled were detected in Manipur. The frequent seizure of the wildlife products in Manipur indicates that the Indo-Myanmar route in Manipur appears to have become one of the main transit points for smugglers to transport wildlife products to china and other South Asian countries.
