Rhino killed in Manas, Assam

160 red sanders logs seized in Andhra Pradesh

Tiger poachers convicted in Uttarakhand

Three professional tiger poachers from Haryana whom were an accused in a tiger poaching case of Corbett tiger reserve in May 2012 were found guilty by trial court and sentenced them to three years imprisonment. Update on 1st Week November 2013: These tiger poachers were not convicted for killing the tiger as believed earlier, they were punished only for the illegal possession of traps and spears.

3 years imprisonment for poaching in wildlife sanctuary

A local court in Rajgarh district of Madhya Pradesh had convicted a person who was detained with dead fishes, axe and traps in Narsinghgarh Wildlife Sanctuary on October 2012. Accused was sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment and Rs. 10,000 fine.

Foreign nationals convicted for snake venom smuggling

Two foreign nationals, one each from Ecuador and Nigeria were found guilty in snake venom smuggling and sentenced to three years imprisonment and Rs. 10,000 fine each by Judicial Magistrate First Class-Perumbavoor, Kerala. The case was detected on 26 January 2012 when accused were try to board a Chennai bound flight at Cochin International Airport, during luggage checking officials found snake venom packed in 16 condoms.

Sharp rise in red sanders smuggling by airline staff

Increasing instances of airline staff smuggling red sanders out of the country have alarmed officials, three cases of smuggling by airline operatives have come to light in the past month, the latest one on 20 October 2013 when two crew members of Air India were caught smuggling the wood from Delhi to Hong Kong late at night.

Sloth bear performer convicted in Delhi

A trial court in Delhi had found guilty on a sloth bear performer for possessing the animal without any licence or authority. During the detention he was found with one female sloth bear and was exhibiting performance of bear publicly on October 2005 in East Delhi. Court held that accused contravened the provisions of section 9/49 of Wild Life (Protection) Act. The said offence is punishable u/s 51 of Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.

12 peacocks killed in Rajasthan

3 people were arrested in Bundi district of Rajasthan for poisoning 12 peacocks on 15 October 2013.

Notorious illegal wildlife trader arrested in North-east India

Notorious illegal wildlife trader and repeat offender in wildlife crime, Ratiram Sharma has arrested from Nagaland in connection with recent spurt of rhino poaching in Assam. He was earlier an accused in rhino horn smuggling cases registered in North Bengal and Assam respectively in 1995 and 2002. In 2006 he was caught red-handed with leopard skins, tiger skeleton and rhino skin pieces by West Bengal forest department and court had sentenced him for 5 years in this case.
