Ten leopard poachers convicted in Panna, Madhya Pradesh

On 27 April 2012, CJM Court in Panna had convicted 10 persons in connection with seizure of leopard bones and sambar antlers in North Panna forest division on 19 December 2010. Three accused has to serve three years rigorous imprisonment, the other three has to serve two years rigorous imprisonment, another three has to serve 1 years imprisonment and last one has to serve six months rigorous imprisonment. All the convicted need to pay Rs 1,000 fine also.

28 elephants electrocuted in the last two years in Karnataka

28 elephants were electrocuted accidentally or deliberate manner in last two years in Karnataka. Statistics shows that , 236 elephants have died — 121 during 2010-11 and 115 during 2011-12 — due to various reasons. During 2010-11, 97 elephants died in the State due to natural causes that included reasons such as old age and sickness. As many as seven elephants died of gun shots. Road accidents claimed the lives of two elephants, one died in a fight among the herd and one fell to poaching, apart from 13 electrocution incidents. During 2011-12, 84 animals died of natural causes, three from gun shots, five in fights, three in road accidents and 15 of electrocution. Five calves were mauled and eaten by tigers.

Leopard poachers convicted to 3 years imprisonment

Chief Judicial Magistrate of Almora, Uttarakhand had sentenced two persons yesterday for killing a leopard and later skinned it on 10 October 2001. Accused has to serve three years rigorous imprisonment and has to pay a fine of Rupees 10,000 each.

Two tigers caught in poacher's trap, one died another rescued

Two tigers caught in a series of iron jaw traps placed by poachers in Tadoba Andhari tiger reserve, Chandrapur district of Maharashtra on 26 April 2012, one sub-adult male tiger died and another adult male tiger was rescued by forest department late in the night. Leg of one forest guard who went there for investigate the tiger death was also caught in third trap placed by poachers nearby and was miraculously escaped without any serious injury.

Government plans to auction seized Red Sanders

Andhra Pradesh government have a plan to auction 8000 tons of seized red sanders if their proposal agreed by Central government. Before taking the decision union government need to check their obligation under international agreement, CITES. There is no conservation value on this proposal, it will only send a wrong message to people that one day government will legalize the current illegal trade.
